If this is too white, can it be removed and replaced with something more subtle.

Yes it can be removed. This is a very dense, white opaque film, so it has no soft or frosted look to it. Hope this helps. We are also not carrying the 3M films any longer as of 12/15, so you would need to choose one of the Solyx white or frosted films if you have not already purchased them.
